X-Wheel of Fortune

X-Wheel of Fortune

Adjusted processing and cropping of this version of the wheel of forutune card. I still don’t think I like it as much as some of the other cards, but I do feel like its a lot better. Still, would love other opinions. Blah…

The Routlette wheel is a nice touch, but I think having her posed on the playing board is what’s throwing things off. The other cards are on a black background, and this one has much more going on.

That lighting on the face makes a big difference! I think it’s ok that you don’t like it as much as the others… Every card can’t be your favorite! Anyway, I like this much better now that I can see her face.

I like the lighting on the other one better, and agree that thte playing board on the floor may be too much. I also like Christy9799’s idea of lighting from below.

@RyanSpade: Actually, I tried it without the background as well, but it just doesn’t feel right to me. I like it even less. I think the high angle on the shot makes me like it less with her floating. I kind of compromised by processing the table to mostly black (in reality its green felt).

@lrayholly: as I said before, the lighting was darker before because I thought it added mystery, but that doesn’t seem to have worked for anyone else (except Max below). I do like the really like the crop better this time though and think it helps a lot. Still may reshoot it some time.

@max1975: I dunno. In any case, I overlight most things so that I can change it in post later, but I can’t just create a bottom light, so that would definitely cost me a reshoot.

I like that you can see her face better on this one (I like her expression). If ppl think it’s too busy, maybe get rid of the roulette wheel instead of playing board. To me, her moving on the playing board conveys that she’s in charge of destiny better than the roulette wheel does. If that’s what you’re going for.

@beststephi: That’s an interesting idea. I just kind of feel weird about there not being a wheel on the wheel of fortune card. it just felt like it needed on. I don’t know. Maybe not. I’m curious as to what other people think about it.

I would be interested to see the wheel as a backdrop rather than in the foreground, in this shot.

(What I was thinking before when I commented on the first version of this was the woman standing sort of a la Da Vinci’s famous shot, with the wheel behind her, but then you are talking a re-shoot).

@sadandbeautiful (Sarah): hah! actually, that did occur to me. And I even took a nude shot of her standing straight at the camera with her arms stretched out and legs spread like that. But in the end, I didn’t like it as much.

I think the background is OK. I just don’t like this card as much as the others because she seems out of focus.

@terpsichoreann: someone else (off flickr) commented on that. I kind of did an intentional "focus softening" on her in photoshop to give her a more ethereal feel. Maybe its too much. I dunno.

My thought is that she looks like she’s too much in control/possession of the wheel, rather than offering it up for the viewer to take a spin (or, if she’s the actor, taking a spin and hoping it comes out good.

Maybe move the wheel a little further forward so that she’s reaching for it?

@Pyrtolin: hmmm… but compositionally and concept wise you like the basic idea?

  14. June 22, 2007 at 4:31 pm

I agree with Pyrtolin – she does not look like she wants anyone else to try their fortune. I like that she is posed on the palying board, I don’t think the background is noisy, but I wish she was holding the wheel in her hands , sort of half offering it to me – she has the perfect impression in her face though.

@Baroness Nordmark: the more time goes by, the more I think I’m going to go back to the more mysterious shadowed original version of the card. It, especially looks much better when printed.

I like it…one little thing I noticed is that her, um, butt seems to have some straight lines in it that a probably naturally curved…?

  17. July 25, 2007 at 2:58 pm

@d.rex: hmm… actually, I didn’t modify the shape of her butt at all. Also, the more time goes by (its been a while since I did this one) the more I start leaning back towards the older darker version of the card. I think it evokes the mood better.
