Day 139 of 365 days.

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Maverick knows.

The creative process is an interesting thing. I actually set out to make a black and white with this shot. I placed my lights so that I’d have nice heavy darks and hard contrast with my backdrop. I made sure to get a very high exposure and good depth of field. In Photoshop, I upped the levels a bit to really push the shadows and I digitally sharpened the shot to bring more texture to my skin. But then I liked the shot a lot better in color than in black and white. I thought about converting it to B&W and then adding a warming filter, but honestly, I like the warmth of the light against my face with the natural (albeit oversaturated) color. I still have this desire to learn to use strobes, but for my style, I grow more and more fond of hot lights every time I use them. I also thought the 16×9 crop added kind of a cinematic appeal. Alec Baldwin, eat your heart out.

365 days

Added to the Cream of the Crop pool as my personal favorite.

Yeah, this is really great Mav. Love the minimalness (is that a word?) of it…and I’m inclined to agree that color was the way to go.

    Awesome lighting.

Good call! The color is great. I like the composition too. The longer rectangle kinda pulls it out more, making it even more isolating to the figure than would the conventional framing. This is really great. Classic. Be a good illustration for that old time radio show, the shadow!

Excellent self portrait where either through the picture, either through your notes, you reveal an effective capacity as a photographer.

    Congratulations.

this is really great mav. for some reason alot of your shots and writing make me think of comic hero’s… did you mention before that you are into them? my son’s dad invited me into the crazy comic world – was maverick a character? i keep thinking "hellboy" for some reason…

  36. December 30, 2006 at 12:53 am

    Great shot.

  37. December 30, 2006 at 1:47 am

wow… tons of comments. Thank you everyone.

@jessie: yeah, I love comic books. And I have since I was a little kid. There was a maverick character, yes. But he sucked. And hellboy was one of my halloween costumes.

A really great capture. I love the contrast of the darkness and the brightness of the skin, and also the angle of the model. The title of the picture is fitting. It has a Hitchcok feel to it – it’s like a movie poster. Striking.

This is a fantastic shot. Just a great shot. I really like the black background. It is like the guy is emerging from the darkness.

What can I say. Fantastic shot, crop and colors. One little remark: In the large size photo you can still see the hair outline and one or two white spots in the black background. I would remove these to make the shot absolutely perfect.

Lovely work, the composition and idea is really original and cool!
I like very much the black background that envelope all the picture,
only don’t like the color’s tone on the face! A bit unreal. Great the lighning and the shadows!

Great emotion and expression in the eyes.
The darkness emphasises the head and hands very effectively.

Really nice. A whole atmosphere is created, colors are good and do help to create the mood. The expression is also very good. I like the use of the black, not only as part of the composition but as an active element in the ‘creating the mood’ kind of thing.
