Day 60 of 365 days.

Back to black and white photos. Another Tuesday date night for steph and I. This time at Piper’s Pub, a little Scottish place on the Southside of Pittsburgh. If I had this shot to take over again, I’d probably adjust Steph’s ring so tht it was pointing more out towards the camera. Its things like that that make the whole self portrait process difficult. I know I would have noticed that if I were actually looking through the camera while I took the shot.

Oh well. I like how it turned out in any case.

Even though you say you would have fixed it, it looks more real and spontaneous the way it is.

this is lovely the way it is 🙂
as for looking at the camera while taking sp’s….that’s the ONE feature i LOVE about the coolpix that i’ve got (and my old one!)…but there are many other things i’m finding i dont’ like all that much 🙁 oh well….c’est la vie!

Nice picture of friendship, and the ring adds a nice touch.

    Beautiful shot…conveys so much!

As to not looking through the viewfinder…I usually do an automatic ‘test’ shot when I set up a self-portrait, assuming it won’t be the one I use (I might get lucky, but not usually!). So I set it up, set the timer, and as soon as it’s snapped I get up and look at the playback w/o moving the tripod. Then I have an idea of framing…do I want to go more left, more right, zoom out, etc?
It is definitely different than being the photographer of what you see in front of you, but I like the whole process of it!

Great photo. Like the ring just as it is — it helps to show how much bigger your hands are than hers (btw, you both have nice hands). I like how your hands are relaxed and hers have to stretch to fit yours.

    Great photo! Full of love!

hey! nice hands! I like the details in the hands, and the photo Treasure this photo, what a neat thing to have maybe in the middle of a nine part collage or something.

Here’s why I gave you the score i did: The DoF is good! I like the composition, but you’ve got that thing on the bottom left that distracts, you’ve got a too bright background area on the top right that distracts as well. And your hand was a little blury towards the far left. But hey, not bad for not being able to look in the camera much!

i like this moment… that is what it is. a moment. one without forethought… so i would not sweat the ring at all…

this is sweet and moody! nice use of depth of field and Black and White choice. it’s a pity for the composition: hands and fingers should be more centered and the horizontal crop "soffocates" the sense of space necessary to this picture to come out

i agree with sgrazied…it’s cute pic, very delicate and nice…but colours aren’t so interesting and composition is too tight…

nice shot, beautiful message of love and respect of each other.
yet in details, there’s isn’t much creativity here, and the colors don’t make a difference.

Ooo, hands. One of the more difficult motives, I think, because it’s done so often, in so many ways, that you really have to do add something to it to keep the interest of the viewer. I think you somewhat did that with the contrasts; woman/man, dark/light, sizes and so on. I also like the background.
The composition is straight forward. I agree with your crop. The one hand being more dominant than the other is helping getting a story across.
You’ve worked with the shades nicely. No contrast drama there. That’s good. In a perfect world you would’ve captured more of the skin tones and textures, and gotten rid of the blury object in front.
But you’ve captured a good atmosphere and mood here. You get a story across. I think that’s the most important of all.

as always, thankyou for the comments, everyone. The thing with the ring is, I don’t want it pointed directly at the camera, but I kind of wish it wasn’t squished between our fingers either. I like being able to see the setting rather than the stone though.

I see everyone’s point about the napkin in the foreground. I sort of feel like it should bother me, but somehow it doesn’t. I think i just consider it a natural part of the table, but I agree that if its distracting everyone, it probably shouldn’t be there.

As for the crop, I thought about going longer/wider, but I rather like the aspect ratio this way. It would have been nice to get Steph’s wrist in as well as mine, but it wasn’t to be, and if I had to choose one, well, I figured its my self-portrait project, right?
