on preliminary jammy jam planning…

Stewart
featuring, my good friend and
former teen model, Gidge!

EDIT: If enough people want the party to be on 8/12 instead of 7/29, Steph would be ok with that. So really quick, when is a better party day. 7/29 or 8/12?

So as some of you already know, and others might not know, beststephi and I are tentatively planning Jammy Jam 2006 to be on Saturday, July 29th. It’ll be great. It’ll be maginificent. Decades from now, children will sing its praises as though it were the Woodstock of the early 21st century. Or something like that… really, the most important thing is that I get lots of good presents. Good presents could include, a Playstation3, Cash, sports car, cash, a supermodel orgy, cash, a new pinball machine, cash, an HD projector, cash or ummm… cash. On second thought, cash might be tacky, so I’m totally up for that orgy.

Oh, uh… where was I?

Oh yeah, so we’ve been tentatively planning Jammy Jam to be at the end of July. And as we get closer and start to make plans, an idea was floated by me. The lovely and talented but blog lacking sister of avocado_tom, Gidge called me this weekend and asked me if her band, Stewart could play Jammy Jam. I was intrigued by the idea. I’ve never really considered having a live band at the Maverick Jams before. Right now I’m actually kind of into the idea. So I told her, if she and her band are up for it, then sure.

But then I got to thinking, there’s a couple logistical problems. Biggest one is, where the fuck do I put a band? As I see it, these are the basic options: Our living room, the bar area, my basement, the backyard, the attic. All have advantages and disadvantages. So I’m wondering. For people who have seen/been to Steph and my house, where would be the best place to put a band. Do you think its even a good idea to have a band? Should I give up delusions of grandeur and just toss on some MP3s?

And then that brings us to the second problem. If I were to go through the trouble of cleaning out and rearranging a section of my house (say the basement, but whichever area), is it worth it for just one band? Jammy Jam is usually like a 7+ hour event. Would it be cool to have 2 or 3 bands alteranting throughout the night? Are there any other bands reading this who would like to do it? You know? For like free and stuff? Well, all the beer they can drink anyway? *cough cough* bryguypgh and the Gladstone Ruckus, I’m looking in your general direction. Both of the bands I mentioned earlier were kinda punk-oriented. Anyone know a more poppy, rocky, or urbany hiphoppy bands that owe them a favor and want to do a set at my birthday party for free? sui66iy, can you make the DJ Slim Effect read this and comment as to whether or not he’d be interested?

Anyway, I’m looking for people’s thoughts and input and whatever other ideas you might have. One day, Jammy Jam will become so large that I’ll be required to rent halls instead of just my house and then we’ll have it in a giant field somewhere where people will trip out on acid and have sex in the mud. Oh how glorious it will all be!

Well, one step at a time. Thoughts?

    Not that I’ll be there…

But I say a band should be in the backyard, on a stage built from left over pallets.

that might be cool… that might fix one of the problems with my backyard (that being that it isn
t very level). It still leaves the other problem, that there’s a pool in the middle of my backyard. But there’d still be room, I guess.

I have two leftover pallettes you could have if you are seriously considering that schema. They’re otherwise hopefully going out in bulk pickup this week though.

how well does that work? Pallettes as a stage? I’ve never seen that done before.

we are currently leaning towards the basement locale. Thanx for the offer though.

*mav’s AIM* (12:03:21 PM): ok, if I were to have bands at jammy jam, where would I put them?
*my AIM* (12:04:57 PM): out back = nice space, free visits from officer friendly. basement = not nice space, officer freindly less likely to attend your party.

You guys seem pretty friendly with the neighbors though. What are your chances, by consulting with them ahead of time, of avoiding any calls to said officer?

Re: Not that I’ll be there…

yeah… I think in all likelihood, they’d be here and that would be fine. At least the direct neighbors… Mike has suggested the living room as the “stage” with people hanging out more in the bar area… I’m currently consideirng that theory.

Outside would be neat. But it has the major draw back that without a weather dominator, I don’t have a good way of “keeping Pittsburgh from happening.” and I dunno if Gidge and Bryon’s bands follow more the Unruly Mob mentality or the Belly mentality.

          2. June 19, 2006 at 10:25 pm

Re: Not that I’ll be there…

            Belly…what wusses.

Drums are way loud, and given the small space, I think the living room wouldn’t be the best spot if you hope to have anything like conversation going on. Also aesthetically, I think punky bands work better in basements than nicely furnished living rooms.

On the other hand, if you put them in the basement, then people need to go seek them out. That sucks for the band if they come to play and only a few people wander into the basement now and then, and it sucks for everyone else because they still hear a lot of loud, muffled noise but they don’t quite hear the music.

So…I kinda think the basement is the best spot if you can find a way to integrate it. Something like, put the keg down there so you get a steady stream of people. And big neon signs saying “live music this way!”

Hmm…on the third hand, the band doesn’t have to play the entire party, and maybe it would work out fine in the living room as long as there are good stretches of time when they’re not playing.

Damn. This is soundling like a lot of fun. I hope there’s some way I can manage to be there.

Re: Not that I’ll be there…

            1) You only wish you could have had the loyalty of your fanbase that Belly had without having to die for them. Ummm… or something.
            2) yeah, for that reason, we are leaning heavily in the direction of “have it in the basement.”
            3) Lots of parties have bands in the basement. It’s certainly not unheard of. People will know to go down there if they want to hear the band.
            4) I’m working on it. I’ll talk to my friend tomorrow. In the meantime, you said you might have another angle? What’s that? Cuz maybe she’d want to get here that way too. It’d be totally cool if you can get back. Steph mentioned thinking it’d be cool if you could play here too.

Not a good angle. But I’ll try to figure something out, and if I do she’d be welcome catch a ride with me.

Re: Not that I’ll be there…

For a hundred bucks I could catch a train from Raleigh on Friday. She could do that too, but it’d cost her another hundred to go back. Probably cheaper than driving, though.

just so you know, taking a plane one way from raleigh (instead of a train) would only be $106, that same day. So if that’s better for you, you should look into it.

its not set in stone, but its fairly definite… maybe 95%

my birthday is the 1st of August. And Jammy Jam is nothing if not my birtday party. Besides, I’ve got wrestling shows 7/22 and 8/5. 8/12 is ‘s birthday, so that could have been a possibility, but she generally prefers her b-day celebration to be lower key. A dinner somewhere or something. And then 8/19 I have another show again. It’s a busy summer.

      Where might you be?

      1. June 19, 2006 at 5:59 pm

California. Ironically, for a delayed birthday party originally targeted at July 4. I’ll probably be making specific plans this evening, so I’ll try to keep Jammy Jam’s date in mind, but it might be impossible.

Thanx for forwarding to Slim, btw.

either date works for me, although the 12th might be slightly better. Not sure. I’d say basement for the band depending on when they’re going on. Less stress on the neighbors… Unless, of course, you’re starting in the afternoon.

    My 2 cents worth… a VERY important 2 cents

Hopefully you received it in today’s mail… your brother’s Wedding Reception is going to be 7/29. So you may really want to consider having your party on 8/12! I’m just saying, is all.
