on the games people play…

Last night, beststephi, sui66iy and I played HeroClix for the first time. It was actually much more interesting than I would have thought. We played the simplest (100 point) variation of the game, but I’m curious to play it again with more points and see how it goes. Next time, maybe I’lll use slightly more strategy in putting my team together as well. Steph won.

Went to Ross Park Mall with vanango today. Saw a place called Build-A-Bear Workshop that was pretty cool. You go in and you pick your own teddy bear (or cat or dog or bunny or whatever) skin and you stuff it yourself and then put together an outfit for it. I guess this isn’t really a game, but it does seem like a fun thing to do. It would be a totally awesome date activity.

sui66iy and I had been talking about role playing games a lot lately, and in particular I was saying that I think beststephi should play them (she never really has). Mike now has me thinking about Paranoia. Which I never actually played before, but the idea intrigues me.

I haven’t played Spades in quite some time. I’m in the mood. Is anyone else.

max1975 has been talking smack about tennis lately and is serious need of having his mouth forcibly shut. So I propose a challenge. The 2003 Who’s the Bitch Now Invitational Challenge. I will only be sending one invitation, in the form of a punk card to one Stephen Bajzek. One match of tennis, one on one… loser publically acknowledges his indentured bitchitude to the winner via livejournal… Of course, I don’t think a certain someone has the… shall we say… cajones to respond… probably has gotten to comfortable in hiw womens jeans… I’m just saying is all…

hmmm… I can’t tell if that’s a foolish bravado “ok bring it, I ain’t ducking you” or a very sensible yet wussy “no no no, please Mr. Maverick, don’t bring the pain, I know I’m your bitch”

if you honestly hope to beat me, i recommend practice, rather than continued tiresome trash-talk.

I don’t need practice, I’m entirely prepared to wipe the court with your carcass right this very moment.

You just say that because you’ve inferred from my last few posts that, at this very moment, i lack the strength to stand. which is pretty much true. but, unfortunately for you, at this very moment i am hard at work contributing to the economy so that i can pay ridiculously high taxes to sustain the pitiful existence of layabouts like yourself. so you’ll just have to wait.

promised maria i’d play basketball with her tomorrow, and i should go to frisbee practice wednesday. is thursday a convenient day to suffer the next in your long line of crushing defeats?

sigh… wait til Thursday? Jeeze… and I was hoping to slowly roast your remains over a nice barbecue sometime midweek… But if I have to wait, I have to wait…

            hmmm… Loserboy… tastes just like chicken….

so, just out of curiosity, from where does your confidence spring? do you have some plan involving a woman with fake breasts creaming me with a steel chair mid-set? or have you just completely lost your fragile grip on reality?

no… I need no such inferior tactics. The fact that you are even considering them shows that you are of a weaker mindset. You are worried because you know that I’m faster than you are. I’m prettier than you are. Your racket can’t hit what your eyes can’t see. Float like a butterfly. Sting like a bee. Rumble young man, rumble!

          5. June 10, 2003 at 8:22 am

            okay…clearly the reality thing, then.

I’m losing my grip on reality? Dude, you’re the world’s biggest She Spies fan.

          7. June 10, 2003 at 10:41 am

Okay. I was planning to beat you just to bring you to your senses, but now it looks like i’ll be defending the honor of she spies too. Very well.

    cough..cough..SHADOWRUN..cough..cough….cough

Whew. Excuse me. I’m sorry, what were you saying?

    1. June 9, 2003 at 4:55 pm

I see your Shadowrun and raise you a game of Gammarauders.

yeah yeah yeah, I know… and I figured you might actually comment on that. The problem is that as much as I miss gaming in the back of my mind, I’m not convinced that I currently have the dedication to devote myself to it in a way that wouldn’t make me feel like I wasn’t cheating, myself, the character and the rest of the campaign. I always hated gamers who were undependable and I feel like right now that would be me. So until I can convince myself that I can do better than that, it best just remain a pipe dream to me…

*sigh* but I do so miss ShadowRun

For a one-time game Paranoia’s a pretty good choice, in my opinion. Only the GM needs to know the rules, and the setting isn’t too hard to explain. After that is is all shooting trouble and over-acting. Oh yeah, there’s usually a lot of laughing too.

Yeah, never played it. But I maintain that the best one-time game is Macho Women With Guns

      2. June 9, 2003 at 5:22 pm

I can totally appreciate that, and I kinda figured that was the situation. I only mentioned it because you hadn’t actually said yes or no yet.

If you ever change your mind, just let me know.

well, I am still thinking about it… just don’t know yet.,.. have you guys started already?

          1. June 11, 2003 at 4:46 am

Nope. Game delayed on account of a damn 4 evening-a-week sadistics summer class I’m taking, and delayed until the Amber game is over. Both of these should be over some time in the next month or so, and we’ll probably start around the middle of July.

Seriously, though, I’m not trying to pressure you, I was just making a friendly jab. If you really are interested, I can take another person in the group with no problem, but if you’re not, I have enough to go with (5 regulars and 1 occasional player).

  4. June 9, 2003 at 4:53 pm

    hey hey,

if we’re talking Heroclix, there’s a bunch of us that play. We generally get together on the weekends and such. As a nice aside, we’re all older and not entirely socially offensive.

There’s also a regular tournament held at the Sq Hill library every single Sunday. Now those people … well. .. at least they have prizes.

So, I haven’t met you yet. Wanna get together and roll some dice?

oh… well did I not mention that I’ve only played the once and I lost? I dunno that I’m ready to embarrass myself against actual strangers yet… i’m not yet as confident as I am say about wiping the tennis court with ‘s poor decaying bitchlike form. So I need to get a little better first. I’d be willing to hang out and play you though. I might even learn something from the defeat.

Oh, and yes, I realize the Max thing made no sense… but you know how it is… you just get so used to insulting someone in every comment that it becomes second nature…

      1. June 9, 2003 at 5:19 pm

heh, man, we’ve just started too. I mentioned the tournaments because they happen. I’ve played maybe … 4 times now.

Do you have some sort of contact, like an IM name? Having a conversation through LJ blows.

Screw all this Tennis / RPG / whatever bullshit.

SPADES. I want to play SPADES.

    1. June 10, 2003 at 6:11 am

Spades just may be the greatest card game ever devised.

Not to mention that it’s the only one I’m any good at.

None of my current friends play, though. Someone invite me somewhere for trash-talkin’ action.

wow… I thought no one would ever even address that part of the post… yeah, I’m pretty much up for Spades at any point… you know… except for when I’m busy picking what’s left of ‘s bbq’s flesh from my teeth.

Could someone in the DC/Virgina area do me a favor and go bitchslap Sumner. That’d be great, Thanx.

          1. June 10, 2003 at 12:44 pm

Honestly, the gameplay is identical except that in bridge the trump suit changes and there’s an exposed hand (the latter definitely has an impact). But the bidding in bridge gives you a lot more of a chance to explore what your partner has and try to figure out what your opponents have.

          2. mav
            June 10, 2003 at 12:52 pm

            I’ve played bridge before…

I’d argue that those differences are what make the game less fun. The changing trump suit isn’t all that big a deal, but I’d argue that being forced into the same trump suit forces you to try and make the best out of what you are dealt rather than setting yourself up in a better position.

The open hand I think really takes a lot of the fun out of the game.

And I like the the less explanatory bidding.

They really are quite different games… the argument is which one is better… I see you’re point and understand why you like bridge better… you just happen to be wrong and horribly led astray. 😉
