I did a photoshoot for jameel last weekend, and finally got around to putting some of the better ones online. As always, I’d love to hear people’s opinions on them, and any suggestions people might have for a finished photosketch or something. Fair warning, Jameel insisted on posing nude for some of them. I tried to keep it tasteful.
Supposed to do a shoot with saturniakitty this weekend, and I’m still not quite sure what I’m going to do for theme and the like. Torey, I hope you have some ideas.
i think the pics are too yellow. i was going to tell you how to manual white balance, but the pic props say that it is manual wb. was it a left over wb setting? do you use a grey card? maybe flick or the mac is munging the exif.
how do you set it manually? I thought they were too yellow too, but I was blaming it on really crappy lighting.
press WB, choose one of the two manual settings on the right. press * to evaluate white balance while pointing at something white or photo grey–basically something with “equal” rg and b. then your custom wb is set. there’s also a bunch of preset wb settings and you can scroll through them and pick the one that looks best–i’ve been doing that recently since it’s easier, but i think you get get a more professional balance with manual.
I’ll definitely play with that some. I do sometimes use the auto. I don’t have a strong rationale for why I chose not to this time. Thanx for the help.
Unless it’s been changed, the lightbulb in that hallway is pretty old (and fluorescent too, my fluorescent bulbs tend to go a bit yellow when they are older).
yeah, it wasn’t great lighting at all, I could tell before we started. But if I’d known about the manual WB adjustment stuff, it might have been better. I only knew about auto and the presets. I knew the other stuff was there, but had never fiddled with it. I don’t know how it got to manual, actually. I had thought it was set on auto. Anyway, I can probably fix it a bit in post if I decide i care a whole bunch. I’ll end up processing the hell out of them when i do a photosketch anyway.
Damn, I could’ve changed that lightbulb if I’d known….
no biggee… they’ll be fine for a photosketch. If you want better ones, we can take more some other time.

They don’t really seem to be in focus; I think you need a lot more light. (And never trust auto white balance; those things suck.)
yeah, the focus on some is worse than others too… and the problem was that it wasn’t even on AWB. I thought it was, but it was on manual and I didn’t have it set at all. I suppose I should have explicitly checked and I should get used to paying more attention to the screen so I can see how shots turn out as I take them. Lesson learned.
