on my technology disruption field 10′ radius…

things broken:

  • ignition switch in Vagabond (long standing problem, very expensive to fix, just been dealing with it)
  • gas guage in Vagabond (long standing problem, barely even care)
  • driver side power window in Vagabond (this is irritating, just stopped working yesterday. At least its broken in up position, probably worry about it after winter)
  • 3rd monitor graphic card in Verdandi(G4 Tower) (ok, ok, I really don’t need 3 monitors, so I can do without… this was a 3rd party card, and its lasted me like 5 years, I guess I’ll deal…I intend to use Verdandi more or less as a server and do most of my work on the new laptop anyway)
  • 512M DIMM in Valkyrie (at least this is still under warranty… called and got an RMA number, so that I can return it… still kinda an annoyance)

I’m afraid to go use the microwave for fear that it might explode and turn me into a gamma irradiated goliath…. Hmmm, on second thought, maybe I’ll go down there and mircowave some alluminum foil and batteries right now!

EDIT: Add to that list the Apple Website which won’t accept my serial number for the MaC OS Up To Date program so that I can get my copy of Panther… SONOFABITCH!!!!!

I really don’t understand how someone can go from working on a machine with 3 monitors to one with a 12″ screen, but I guess that’s just me.

It’s not as easy to carry the machine with 3 monitors the house… you know, kitchen, bathroom, etc…

yeah… Though actually, just this moment I am drawing on the G4 tower (which is slower than the laptop) just because I didn’t feel like swapping the big monitor cable and the USB periphs and such. Once I am more organized (something I’m going to be working on today) that won’t be as much of a problem.

Honestly, I never draw when I’m sitting anywhere but my desk, and that’s where I need the screen real estate (and the sketch tablet and stuff). For writing, coding, etc, 1024×768 at 12 inches is usually just fine.

I just installed the Sonnet 1.4GHz G4 upgrade chip this weekend. When you have money again, I suggest you do the same.

            how much is it?

I mean, seeing as how I have a 1Ghz powerbook, its not an absolute priority, but sometimes it is nice to be on a desktop instead of a laptop.

$600 currently. The price will undoubtedly come down over time. I went from 733MHz with a 512k l3 cache to 1.4GHz with a 2meg DDR l3 cache and man, is it great!

If only there was someone to make my 800MHz iBook perform like this…

            There is, you buy a powerbook… duh…

            Sigh… I should’ve, but nooooo… I wanted the student special!

but then again, it definitely doesn’t compete for my time with the G4. they are for very different purposes. I just don’t like when I do something that makes the computer chime, but like, it has to spin up the hard disk to find the sound to play the chime, so it’s like, 5 seconds late…

Yeah, I get the value of portability, but I can’t see doing any sort of graphics on that tiny screen. I found my iBook pretty annoying just for writing code, and that doesn’t really require much screen real estate. Or maybe it does; I actually prefer coding on my tiBook rather than my iMac, because the screen’s a bit wider and the vertical space that’s given up doesn’t bother me as much.

I just use my iBook for homework or IM… Even then I noticed how the 800MHz G3 was whupped by the 733 G4. Sigh. But the screen is the same resolution as my stupid 15″ flat panel for the G4, so I didn’t notice real estate issues until I added a high-res 17″ CRT to the G4.

Coding takes a lot of realestate for me, but I never do it at home. I have taken a liking to IDEs (particularly IDEA, since we use Java at work) and they tend to take up a lot of space.

well, like he said, my 15″ LCD only does 1024×768 anyway… so the screen resolution is exactly the same, and I really don’t care about the physical screen size all that much. Still, for graphic work, you really do have to hook up an external monitor. Once I do, no problem though.

oh, the 3rd monitor was never necessary… it was always just a convenience. I always drew with just two of them, and I’d use the 3rd for Mail and AIM sessions and what not.

The Powerbook does have an external monitor port, so I can do two monitors just fine.
