my life as a wrestler, week 10

So last night (Thursday) I was back in the ring after missing a week from being abroad. Given that I hadn’t really worked out as much as I normally do for a week, and that I hadn’t been in the ring in two weeks, I thought I’d be kind of out of it and would get sore really fast. I must be getting in better shape (yay!) because I actually feel fine. My timing was off a bit though on our free wrestling as was my form on a couple moves. And of course once I screwed one up I got flustered and started making more mistakes. I really need to work on that. The not getting so down on myself and caught up that I continue to fuck things up. *sigh*

hurtsogood has been telling me that Marc has been asking me to go back to Fight Club. I wonder if I should try to do that one of these days. Thing is, its on Friday, and Friday is my day off… Working out should not occur on Friday. Any sweating that occurs should come from drinking or sex.

Last week the class learned the waistlock takeover, gentry, gentry reverse, and gentry reverse-wristlock. A lot to go over, and a lot to pick up on. But I think I did ok. In fact, I was very happy with how my waistlock takeover is going, and it may have fast become one of my favorite moves. Had no problems giving it or taking it. My gentry reversal is a little more awkward than i would like it to be at this point, but I think that will just become more fluid with time.

After that we learned another of my favorite of the classic wrestling moves, the drop toe hold. I had no problems with this either, even though i thought it was going to be awkward. I was pretty happy how it turned out.

So all of my new moves went pretty well this week. My big botch came with a backwards single leg takedown, which I think was a careless mistake from not having been in the ring in two weeks, and then holding on too long on an arm drag which was a compounded mistake from 1) throwing someone much larger than I am used to throwing, and therefore being caught up in their momentum, and 2) being flustered from the earlier mistake, as I said before. Anyway, things to work on. I also need to work on that headlock takeover.

All in all, I have been happy with my progress, especially this week. I am moving up towards enough holds and moves that I don’t feel like a total nimrod in the ring. Obviously, I’m nowhere near good yet, but it is encouraging to be able to look at what I’ve done so far and feel like I have learned some stuff.

Moves learned this week: Waistlock takeover, gentry, gentry reversal, gentry reversal into a waistlock, drop toe hold. 22 down, 979 to go.
