Chelsey: The Ring of Fire

Once upon a time I used to take photos regularly. Then grad school happened. It turns out grad school is not terribly conducive to free time for side careers. Whodathunk, right? Anyway, I was contacted by the lovely and talented Chelsey to shoot some promo photos for her hula hooping performance art business. And like if you’re…

Day 1148 of 365 4 lyf. What can brown do for you? Not a whole hell of a lot apparently. So I ordered some clothes for a shoot last week. They were supposed to arrive on Thursday or Friday and since the shoot was Saturday, that seemed fine. Thursday night the UPS computer called me…

Day 973 of 365 Again. Didn’t really have a good idea for today, but since my mother loved it so much the last time I was playing with fire I thought I’d do some more. So yeah, only can I blow fire, I can also throw it. Pretty exciting huh? No photoshopping here other than…

Day 931 of 365 Again. I give up! I’ve spent the last several hours hacking the database and code for the Cosmic Hellcats website. Somehow character encoding or translation on my movable type installation or my mysql db got screwed up, and for the life of me I can’t figure out how, but several of…

Day 709 of 365 More.

Another day, another fire.

Yesterday it was pyrotechnics, today it’s just a good old fashioned modern day barbecue.

Steph asked me to grill some chicken for dinner today, but I was working on Hellcats most of the day, so i didn’t get to it til late. I also decided to use the opportunity to show her how to build a proper barbecue fire. I don’t believe in gas grills. Proper BBQ involves charcoal, lighter fluid, and some good old fashioned flame. It also helps if you have a tasty homemade BBQ sauce to put on the meat. My sauce is famous, as is my flame. When it burns hot enough to light a self-portrait you know its a good temperature to cook some meat.

Wonder what I should burn tomorrow?

Nine of Swords

Nine of Swords

With a name like Morganna, I figured I had to use her for a sword card (my gothic look). I think this turned out fairly well. A lot of my more recent tarot cards have been fairly prop heavy. It’s nice to just get one that goes back to basics.

I love her stare in this. I thin its absolutely piercing.

Nine of Staffs

Nine of Staffs

It’s been a while since I posted a new Tarot card. I actually had to take a break from it when my computer was in the shop. While it was down D and Adam were in town to pose for their cards. I finished editing D’s tonight. Adam’s will be up soon though, and I’m probably shooting two more this week as well. I need to get some more of the guy cards done. Never thought I’d say that.

Anyway, I was concerned about this one. I was worried that D’s green hair would come across as too punk and not preppy enough to be a staff card, but upon completion I think the hair color combined with the thong and the fire just make the card a little edgier witout moving her into goth per se. She’s certainly not A&F here, but I’d still think she was kind of trendy. Opinions?

XV-Devil

XV-Devil

Schwei was a friend of Brae’s (the model I picked to be the Death card in my Tarot deck) and was accompanying her on her shoot with me. He didn’t have any modeling experience but he had a good look for my concept of the Devil card. I especially love the beard and the tattoo on his hand.

Initially I had envisioned the devil having traditional horns, and I probably could have created some pretty realistic ones in photoshop or maybe with theater makeup, but in retrospect, I’m kind of glad I didn’t. I really like the look of the single model bathed in red light except for the flaming hand. I think more would have been distracting.

This also shows that there are indeed men in the Tarot deck. It’s only the second male card I’ve done. Its actually a little harder to find male models for this kind of thing than I thought it would be. I also need to get some more of the less gothic cards done. Just so that there’s a little more variety. The cards with Steph and Theresa show a little more playfulness, but its still on the dark side right now.
