A couple weeks ago, Tate Nations, master of skateboard photography, was nice enough to do a tutorial for the 365 Podcast which I cohost. During the same episode, I did a tutorial on shooting high contrast black and whites. Tate said he’d try my technique if I’d try some of his.

So this weekend, I went down to a local skate park and the guys there were nice enough to allow me to take a few pics of them. I might not be Tate yet, but I’m quite happy with how they came out. It’s always nice to get out of the studio and its great to have the opportunity to do something different. Still, I think I’ll be returning to models soon.

This guy, Doug, was one of the skaters at the park and the one I took the most photos of. After asking him if he’d mind if I took some shots, and getting his card so that I could send him some, he agreed to try some of his best tricks for me.

After I sent him the shots, he said how much he appreciated it, and invited me to come back down to the park once it warms up to catch some of the other skaters who hang out there.

    Hi, I’m HAL the UtataBot

I’m afraid I’ve had to remove your photo from the Utata Pool as it broke one or more of our group pool rules:

You must only post photos to the Utata pool one at a time

Please read the rules for posting to the Utata pool in the group description.

The skate park series is good sports photography. I know it is a change from your studio stuff, but you should consider squeezing in a bit more of it. The skater boys would probably love to blow these up for their own walls. Hope you clue them in on the results.

@Teppo: thanks. I’d been meaning to start this for a while. But I have so many other photo projects going on. Still its a neat idea and I think will make a nice little book when its done.
